IN THE SILENCE THAT PRECEDES GRACE - With Mary, in the hour when God's will blossoms

There were days when everything seemed to slow down. Work did not stop, nor did responsibilities cease, but every gesture took on a quieter weight, as if space itself expanded to make room for something. Everything was in motion, but with the pace of one who waits. One could sense that silent tension which accompanies true vigils: when something important is about to happen, but one must first pass through recollection.

Sunday, 14 August 1836.

It was one of those days.

St. Vincent's Hospital — young and already so inhabited by suffering — moved with its usual discretion. The women's wing, with its twelve beds, welcomed familiar faces: simple women, poor and worn. The Sisters carried out their service with dedication and inward recollection. And at the back, beyond the courtyard, one could glimpse the new building that had been in preparation for months: the male ward, finally completed. It was to be inaugurated the next day, on the feast of the Assumption. Twenty beds, created where once there had only been stables and a barn. A concrete work, born of prayer, tenacity, and faith.

Mary held the full significance of it in her heart. She had followed every phase with care and love, weighing its efforts, entrusting every step. It was an important milestone, and she knew well what it meant for the mission.

Yet, on the eve of that long-awaited fulfilment, the Lord seemed to be leading her elsewhere. Not far — but deeper. As if, before offering a new ward, He was asking her to offer herself — once again — in listening, in surrender, in intercession.

That morning, a letter had arrived from Sister Mary Lucy, a young sister, ardent but unsettled. She had written with respect, but between the lines one could discern a struggle: the fear of not being enough, the sincere desire to belong, and yet the dread of binding herself forever. Mary knew that struggle well. Not in theory, but in life. She had passed through it — not just once. And she knew that no vocation is born from certainty. Only from trust.

She withdrew to her room, not so much to rest as to enter into silence. Pen in hand, the page still blank before her, she lingered. Beside the lamp, an image of the Madonna. Mary was her guide, her companion, her hidden strength. Not an ornament, but a presence. Not a symbol, but a mother.

Mary had chosen her as such from the beginning. She had learned from her how to stand beneath the Cross without asking for explanations. How to offer her own "yes" even when the way grew dark. How to trust — always. And now, in the heart of the vigil, that "yes" returned, asking once more to take form.

When she began to write, the words were not searched for. They were already there. Clear, whole, necessary:

"You will not fail to obtain most precious graces for yourself and others if you have recourse to our ever blessed Queen and dear Mother."

Not advice. Not consolation. A certainty. Born of a life offered. Of inner battles won only through prayer. Of works born not from strength, but from humility.

She wrote it calmly, as one entrusts a key. Then she laid down her pen, closed her eyes and, quietly, took up the Rosary. It was not a pious gesture among others. It was her spiritual breath. The silent prayer in which, day after day, she had learned to bend her will to God's, to safeguard her sisters, to intercede for the poor, to entrust to the Virgin all that she could not even express to herself.

The Rosary had never been, for her, an automatic consolation, but a conscious, persevering act of love, offered even when her mind was tired and her body fragile. Each Hail Mary was like a step — sometimes unsteady, sometimes serene — behind the Mother who had gone before her in faith, in silence, in the Cross. And with her, she had learned the greatest secret: that to embrace God's will is the only path to true peace — the kind that does not depend on results, but on fidelity.

In those years, as the work grew and her strength diminished, Mary never ceased to embrace God's design. She did not always understand it, but she always welcomed it. For Mary had taught her: that one does not need to understand in order to say "yes" — it is enough to love.

And in that silent Rosary, slipping through her fingers like an invisible golden thread, Mary enclosed all her daughters, all those cared for in that hospital, and Sister Mary Lucy as well — so that in time she might understand that one never errs when one lets oneself be guided by Mary.

And that the most precious graces — those which cannot be measured — arrive precisely when we stop seeking them and surrender.

But that evening, far from all eyes, what truly matters was fulfilled: a woman, fragile in body but firm in faith, once again placed herself in the hands of the Mother. And in her silent "yes" there was a strength that only heaven measures — a strength that would sustain other vocations, console hearts in struggle, obtain invisible graces.

Mary, discreet and faithful, received that offering and presented it to the Father, as only She can: without noise, but with the powerful intimacy of one who generates life in the Spirit.

The life of Venerable Mary Aikenhead is a silent yet powerful invitation to rediscover the beauty of a faith that seeks no guarantees, but is rooted in trust.

In our times, marked by uncertainty, performance-driven logic, and fears masked as pragmatism, her voice calls us to a higher orientation: to live everything for God, in full submission to His will — even when that will is unclear.

Mary did not respond to reality with calculations, but with a working trust. Her hope was not passive, but concrete and active, able to see in difficulties an invitation both to surrender and to initiative. Even today, in the face of new forms of poverty and fragility, we are called to the same bold hope: to believe that God is at work even where everything seems lacking.

And with her, Mary: not a distant, idealised figure, but the Woman who believed without conditions, who responded fully and truthfully, without giving in to what is merely useful or possible. Mary is the prophetic figure for all times, because she shows us that the only valid criterion for choosing is God's will, not convenience. And God's will is understood only in the silence of prayer, in intimate dialogue with Him, in letting ourselves be formed.

As Pope Francis reminds us in Gaudete et Exsultate, holiness is not escapism, but a trusting immersion in the challenges of one's time. And today, as yesterday, holiness passes through radical trust: one nourished by fidelity in small things, that stands firm even in weariness, and that is unafraid to entrust itself.

Mary Aikenhead, woman of her time, chose not to be overwhelmed by the world's fears, but to serve it with evangelical love. And we, in our time, can do likewise: let ourselves be guided by the Mother and live each day as a "yes" that blossoms in trust.

Lord, teach us to trust in You like Venerable Mary Aikenhead: with hearts free from calculation, ready to say "yes" even when the way is dark.

In this time we live, marked by uncertainties and fears, grant us a faith that does not flee, but remains.

A hope that does not wait for perfect conditions, but entrusts itself to You, knowing You are at work even when all is silent.

Mary, our Mother, Woman for all times, teach us to choose God's will as our only measure, to pray with perseverance, to serve with love, to walk each day in the silence that precedes grace.

And may every one of our "yeses," Lord, be lost in Yours, like a drop in the sea, and become a living sign of Your presence for the world, an echo of Your peace, an instrument of Your will.
